What is a brain map?

Brain mapping is a tool we use at A Restored Mind to identify the brain’s current brainwave patterns. Completing a brain map is a painless process and the results help us create an individualized neurofeedback plan for each individual.

How does a brain map work?

Brain maps are created by using a Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG) which provides accurate detailing of your brainwave patterns.  The results of your personal qEEG are compared to a database of established standards of normal brain function to determine if imbalances exist.  A qEEG does not identify or diagnose specific conditions, but rather maps out potential problem areas that can be addressed through neurofeedback.

Why examine brainwaves?

Brainwaves regulate various parts of our body and influence emotions and critical thinking.  There are four types of brainwaves that we look for on our brain maps:

  • Beta Waves are associated with alertness, focus, and logical thinking. They are produced during daily activities such as being actively engaged in conversation, making a speech, teaching, etc.
  • Alpha Waves occur when the brain is in a relaxed, alert, and calm state. For example, alpha waves are produced when daydreaming, meditating, or doing light reading.
  • Theta Waves are found during deep relaxation, creativity, and intuition. These types of waves will be present when a person is sleeping, dreaming, or in deep relaxation.
  • Delta Waves are present during deep sleep, relaxation, and healing. They tend to produce the feeling of being rejuvenated and you can increase delta waves with meditation, calming music, enjoying nature, or practicing deep breathing exercises.

Brain maps help form individualized neurofeedback plans.

For a person who experiences an imbalance of the above-mentioned brainwaves, symptoms of those imbalances may show up in their daily lives as difficulty sleeping, nervousness, difficulty controlling emotions, negative thoughts and/or busy mind.  By completing a brain map and getting an accurate picture of what is currently happening in a person’s brain. From there the individual can begin completing neurofeedback services to address those identified areas to improve those symptoms and behaviors.  Neurofeedback provides individuals an amazing opportunity to improving overall wellbeing and health.
